The Average 'Tommy'
The major battles fought by the British and Commonwealth armies in North-West Europe and in Italy, weren't fought by Paras, Commandos, SAS or other 'Elite' units, they were fought by the civilians in uniform that made up the majority of those armies - the average 'Tommy'.
The 'Tommy' could have been a cobbler, baker, bank clerk, miner, plumber, teacher or tailor and could have been from any part of Britain or the Commonwealth. He was the man that the Army went to when things needed doing - he was the backbone of the British and Commonwealth armies and was therefore the backbone of a free society taking on evil tyranny.
Without the Tommy, the world would be a darker place. It's upsetting to see the graves of so many of these men, who ordinarily made up the rich tapestry of life, lying near where they fell. That their cause was just, doesn't make it any easier when you stand in front of a grave of a man you never knew, but a man who died fighting for your freedom and your future.
To the soldiers that were there, you have our eternal gratitude. Thank you. Genuinely, thank you.
